The Story of the Ulu Knife...

A couple of months before I started this web site I found my
first ULU knife. It had been made in India, and it was about Ten Dollars
at my local flea market. Only thing was, I needed to fill some of the voids in
the handle with epoxy, as they would cause the handle to weaken over time, and
in the mean time, collect material while cutting, and be impossible to clean.
Looking around on the net, I found ULUs galore, but they ranged in price from
about twelve dollars to into the hundreds, for really fancy ones. Not wanting to
necessarily order them on the internet, I thought to maybe one day find them in
a culinary store. Today I found them at WalMart for Eight Dollars. The
Handle in this case, is plastic, and it is dishwasher safe. That means it will
be easy to clean, even to boil perhaps, in the field.
The ULU has been used for centuries for Skinning and Preparing Food. As soon as
I saw one I realized how useful it would be for skinning, or preparing fish, or
skinning bark, or preparing any kind of food, in the field. As well, it is
actually small enough to pack. The blade of the ULU will do many more useful
tasks than the ordinary hunting knife.
Found this ULU knife at WalMart for Eight Dollars, Plus Tax. $8. Of course, you have no sheath for it, but you can easily make one out of cardboard, and tape.
Be a little warned, the first time I used this knife, I had a pizza on some cardboard on my table. I easily cut through the microwaved pizza, the cardboard, and into the table surface, before I realized it. Paul

The One At WalMart for $8.
I like the knife very much, but the center hole is a little large for my fingers. I may have to make it bigger. The Rounded Rocker back is easy on the hand. You should be able to skin with it very easily.
