Types of Camping Tents on the Market
There are many, many different types of camping tents that you will find on the market – you are honestly spoilt for choices! Tents have been around since centuries now, perhaps named different terms throughout the years. Of course, there is a huge variety of camping tents you will be able to find on the market, but we have narrowed it down to the top 5 types of campings tents, listed down below:
Backpacking Tents
When we think of backpacking, we think of three things – light-weight, easy to carry and tightly-packed (or compact). That is exactly what backpacking tents are. Thanks to their compact and lightweight design, you can carry them for a long time while you are out trekking on your camping trip, in the beautiful wilderness, without experiencing any discomfort or pain. Backpacking tents are highly sturdy and long-lasting, so you can feel free to carry them even if you are out on a winter camping trip, in inclement weather, or even if you are camping in the dense summer heat.
A-Frame Tents
A-frame tents are one of the most common four person tents available on the market, although you would definitely be able to find a-frame tents which can fit both less than for people, as well as more than four. Having said that, unlike backpacking tents, a-frame tents are nowhere near close to being called ‘lightweight’. Along with this, thanks to their pyramid-shaped design, you will end up having ample amount of floor space and enough room to sleep comfortably at the end of the day. Then again, as a result of the pyramid-shaped design, you will find that you end up with very little headspace.
All in all, the pyramid-shaped design is great if you are camping out in the wilderness, amidst the monsoon season, since the rain simply runs down the slope of the camping tent. Consider a-frame tents to be grand huts! A-frame tents are definitely one of the best camping tents available on the market.
Dome Tents
When it comes to the best camping tents, there is no way you can forget about the god old dome tent. Dome tents are some of the most affordable tents available on the camping tent market. They form their dome structure by having a few aluminium poles resting over one another, giving them an arched design. Along with this pole structure, there is another aluminium pole to support the rain fly. This results in a spacious vestibule area in the dome tent. You can easily fit in your sleeping bags or sleeping pads inside these dome tents as well!
Cabin Tents
Cabin tents, just like dome tents, have a structure of aluminium poles as well. With ample amount of floor space, the interior space of cabin tents resembles that of, well, a cabin! However, you should know that although they look a lot like cabins, cabin tents are nowhere near as fit to be used in inclement weather. Hence, for that very reason, we would not strongly recommend using these camping tents on peak heights, where there are strong and high winds.
To sum it up, cabin tents are some of the larger tents available on the market. Along with this, they are also inexpensive tents, usually because of the material that is used in constructing them. Our tip for you – make sure you have thorough understanding about the material of the tent that you are set out to buy, to make sure that it is durable and sturdy, even if it is on the less expensive side.
Car Top-Roof Tents
When it comes to car camping, we highly recommend car camping tents, also referred to as car top-roof tents. We are sure that all the car campers out there know all about this type of camping tent, but for any one that has no idea about car camping tents, allow us to explain. Car top-roof tents are very similar to the traditional on-the-ground camping tents, but differ in the fact that they keep you off the ground!
You are probably wondering where you would need to be up, above the ground. Well, you will find it amazing to know that when you are out on a camping trip, the chances of you encountering inclement weather can be shockingly high. Along with this, car camping tents ensure that you do not end up having wet gear the next day. Of course, they keep you away from slithering creatures, or any insects or scorpions you may encounter, out in the wilderness.
Three Factors to Consider When Buying a Camping Tent
Let’s be real; buying a camping tent is nowhere near as easy as we would have liked for it to be. So, since we didn’t want you to go through the trouble of trying to figure out what is really important to look out for, when you are on your search to find the best camping tent.
What Is Your budget and How Often Will You Be Using the Tent?
When it comes to buying a tent, or any other purchase for that matter, it is crucial that you carefully think about what your budget is. Of course, no one wants to spend an extravagant amount on a camping tent, way beyond their budget, but having said that, while a cheap tent may do its primary job of, well, being a tent, are you sure it is really serving its purpose? When you are out looking for the best camping tent for you, ensure that you look for the most affordable tent, which falls within your budget. Another important factor to consider when buying the best camping tent is how often you plan on using the tent.
How Many Sleeping Bags Do You Plan on Fitting into Your Camping Tent?
When you are out looking for the best camping tent that suits your liking, it is important to consider how many people, on average, will be using the tent. According to that, you can decide upon how big of a camping tent you would like to buy. While it is easy to find a good four person tent or even a two person tent, you will definitely need to keep an eye out if you are looking for anything more spacious.
For example, we found that some car camping tents were perfect for a family of four and had a spacious tent body, while others were only fit for at most 2 sleeping bags, along with camping gear squeezed in. Likewise, different types of camping tents will cater well to different needs. If you are a solo camper, a dome tent should be more than enough for you! Along with this, you should also consider whether you will be bringing your pet along with you on your camping trips or not.
The Materials Used in the Construction of Camping Tents
Since you will be spending at least a couple of hours, wrapped away snuggly inside your tent walls, we strongly recommend having a thorough understanding of the different types of materials that may be used in the construction of your camping tent. Ideally, you will want to look for a durable tent that will be able to handle adverse weather conditions comfortably as well.
Another important fact to consider is the pole structure, and the type of poles used – two of the most common pole types are fiberglass poles and aluminium poles. Some camping tents may have pre attached poles, while others may require you to manually assemble them. Nearly every tent comes with the tent footprint and tent specs.
Also, ensure you understand the weather protection the camping tent will provide you with, as well as the ground cloth. Some more things you should check for are the peak height of the camping tent, whether the tent has a rain fly, floor space, the tent walls and whether the camping tent comes with any gear storage or not.
